★ Must-ReadHugging Face counted the open-model year: Chinese labs shipped the biggest open model almost every month of 2026
China's monthly ceiling ran between 754 billion and 2.78 trillion parameters. American open releases stayed under 130 billion in five of seven months. Qwen derivatives alone now number 151,448 on the Hub, about 2.6 times Meta's whole footprint, growing 180 to 210 new repos a day.
Models under 1 billion parameters take 83 percent of all downloads ever, and models over 100 billion take 1 percent
From the same report. Even counting only 2026 activity, just 3 percent of downloads went to anything above 70 billion parameters. The frontier gets the headlines and the small models get the traffic.
Microsoft's ThinkingBox is an open sandbox for testing whether an agent can actually do the work
Published August 19. The problem it targets is the one everyone hits second: an agent demos well, then fails unpredictably on real tasks. This gives you somewhere to measure that before a customer does.
OpenAI retires o3 from ChatGPT today, closing a 90 day sunset that started in May
ChatGPT only. The API is unaffected. Worth a look if any of your saved prompts or team workflows still name o3 by hand.
★ Must-ReadAnthropic is funding outside research into whether AI actually helps people, and is paying for it
Announced August 25. Grants for independent evaluation of AI's effect on human wellbeing. Notable because the measurement is being handed to people outside the company rather than kept in house.
Microsoft open sourced Agent Lightning, a way to train agents without rewriting the agent
Released August 17 under an open license. The pitch is that you point it at an agent you already have, in whatever framework, and improve it with reinforcement learning without changing your tools or environment.

★ Must-ReadSimon Willison keeps testing every new model the day it ships, and publishes what actually broke
His August run covers the llm-gemini plugin adding Gemini 3.7 Flash, reasoning traces and server-side tools under LLM 0.32, plus the SVG rendering bug he found and posted the next day. The value is the failure notes, not the launch notes.

The most useful thing published this month for anyone choosing a model. Counts rather than opinions: who released what, at what size, and what people actually downloaded.
OpenAI's own developer forum is where the pricing and speed changes land first
The price drop and the Ultrafast preview both showed up here before the press wrote them up. If you build on the API, this beats waiting for coverage.
Anthropic's newsroom, for the research and policy posts that never make the tech press
This week: grants for independent research into AI and human wellbeing. Quieter than a model launch and more useful if you are deciding how to deploy this stuff at work.

The BriefOpenAI dropped the price of its best model by more than a fifth and promised to hold it there through November 21. If you build on GPT-5.6 Sol, the same work now costs about four fifths of what it did last week, with no code change on your side. The reason is competition: Anthropic, Google and the Chinese open-weight labs are all shipping fast, and price is the lever that moves fastest. If you priced an AI feature months ago and shelved it as too expensive, this is the week to run those numbers again.

Level UpHugging Face just published the numbers on who is actually releasing open models, and one finding should change how you pick one. Tiny models do the real work: everything under 1 billion parameters accounts for 83 percent of all downloads ever, while models above 100 billion take just 1 percent. This week, stop reaching for the biggest model you can afford and test the smallest one that clears your bar. Read the report first, then pick one job you already automate and try it on a small model. State of Open Models, Summer 2026: who ships, who gets downloaded, and the size nobody expected
